Supendra's Story
My story starts in a small one-bedroom apartment in Yonge & Davisville. The Chandrakumars are a family of 5, with me, the middle child that revered in the magic of the loud city offering home and hope . My parents left their home in Nallur, Jaffna and came seeking a better life here in Toronto; the mosaic capital of Canada. Growing up, I was always aware of our Tamil heritage and how much Toronto had to offer us. From the apartment balcony, I had a clear view of the CN Tower and this majestic view was the start of it all. In school, I would draw the Toronto skyline with the infamous SkyDome right beside Toronto’s major landmark, the CN Tower. As I grew up, I realized the CN Tower was actually a lighthouse for many immigrants – symbolizing hope and safety in a storm of uncertainty. Toronto was exactly that; to my family, and to many others, it provided a solid foundation for those seeking refuge and wanting a new life for the betterment of the next generation.
I identify myself as a Tamil-Canadian who was born and raised in Toronto, the greatest city on Earth (in my humble opinion). My home was always filled with love for our Toronto teams. Appa would be home from work and Amma would have finished her cooking, while listening to the Geethavani Tamil Radio. Whether it’s Saturday Night Hockey on CBC, where the Leafs took on a rival, or a weeknight on TSN, watching the Raptors face a division opponent; the Toronto teams were always welcomed in our living room. My enthusiasm for when I received my first Raptors and Leafs jersey was out of this world. I still remember the Koho Leafs jersey I received for Christmas and the Hakeem Olaujwan retro Raptors jersey, which was passed along by one of my cousins. The Toronto sports scene was very much prevalent in my life, and heavily influenced my future endeavours! This was definitely the start of everything.

Representing Toronto has always been something I’ve done instinctively. It just made sense to represent my city, my home and the place that welcomed my parents when they were looking for a haven. My role in social media is ultimately driven by my love for the City of Toronto and the passion to explore our planet. Toronto is one of the most multicultural hubs in the world. It has warmly welcomed generations of immigrants with open arms and continues to do so, providing both an escape and opportunity to those who need it most.
All of these new faces and stories give the city such a dynamic personality revered all around the world. Often dubbed as “the World within a City”, Toronto has provided a range and splendor of cuisine, art, languages and culture. As a Torontonian, I am proud to call this mosaic nucleus my home. Celebrating Toronto here at home is easy, but to take it to lands far away where it is known and unknowned is the best feeling! Our teams, our flags, and our identity as Toronto has truly moulded itself into an identity of its own, sometimes larger than Canada (depending upon the place). It becomes a humbling feeling and truly makes you value home in a city of such caliber.
As for our wondrous planet, I learned very early on that traveling is an underrated investment in myself. In seeing all different parts of the world and what it has to offer, I gain new insight and learn to value just how privileged I am with the life I live. When we travel, we may notice that some of the things we’ve heard about the world end up being very different than what we were indoctrinated and conditioned to believe. Many of the initial myths that get dispelled are often about traveling itself. Essentially, the greatest lesson becomes that we are all connected. The way we perceive the world, the life experiences presented and our own discovery is so worth it and travelling enhances it all to the next level.
